The new applications for the PhD Program in "Foundations of the Life Sciences
and Their Ethical Consequences" at the SEMM (European School of Molecular
Medicine: http://www.semm.it) are now open.

DURATION: 4 years
SALARY: 18.500 Euro per year
LOCATION: Campus Ifom-Ieo (Milano - Italy: http://www.ifom-ieo-campus.it)
AWARDING BODY: University of Milano - Italy
SCIENTIFIC COORDINATOR: Giovanni Boniolo
DESCRIPTION:
The main aim of the PhD program is the creation of a class of highly skilled
scholars, having both scientific and philosophical competences. The students
will have to attend lectures and seminars and to write a dissertation. They will
also be involved in lab activities, by becoming members of one of the research
groups hosted by the institution.

All lectures, seminars, and lab activities are in English. The PhD dissertation
will also have to be written in English.

The PhD program provides for:
1) a strong training in molecular biomedicine in the light of the evolutionary theory;
2) a strong logical-philosophical training;
3) a strong connection between scientific and humanistic subjects;
4) a strong link between theoretical and empirical preparation;
5) a close contact with the international community working on the foundations
of the life sciences, bioethics, and molecular biomedicine.

Both individuals with a scientific background and individuals with a
philosophical background are encouraged to apply

RESEARCH TOPICS:
1) philosophical foundations of the life sciences;
2) ethical implications of the biomedical results;
3) biomedicine and society.

The Campus IFOM-IEO is a center for biomedical research, created by the joint
efforts of the FIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology Foundation (IFOM) and the
Department of Experimental Oncology of the European Institute of Oncology (IEO).
Some numbers for the Campus: 1) 24.000 mq campus surface area; 2) 12.000 mq of
laboratories; 3) 600 research work stations; 4) 450 researchers; 5) 35 research
groups; 6) 13 technological unit.

IFOM (FIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology Foundation) is a research institute
dedicated to the study of the molecular mechanisms involved in cancer formation
and development.

IEO (European Institute of Oncology) is an independent, nonprofit biomedical
research institution and one of the 8 comprehensive cancer centers in Italy. In
addition to providing patients with the best care available, IEO is committed to
cutting-edge research in oncology, ranging from basic to translational research
and clinical trials.
