Dear Sir, Madam,

The Da Vinci Institute, centre for science communication and the IITO, Institute for Innovation and Transdisciplinary Research of the Vrije Universiteit, the Netherlands are hosting the confererence "Sharing Knowlegde" in November 2004. We kindly ask you to forward the following information to colleagues that may be interested:

Conference Sharing Knowledge
Exploring the interfaces between science & society and the role of science communication
1-2 November 2004, Amsterdam
This conference will explore interfaces between science and society, including science communication and multi-domain problem solving.
Key issues are:
- What are the new roads for science communication: science centres, TV, internet?
- How can we incorporate different types of knowledge in the research process?
- What are the risks of 'public communication about science and technology' for thepublic and for politics?
- Why should and how can we organise interaction between science and policy?

Workshop ethical values and scientific knowledge production
As part of the conference, in this workshop we want to explore which new arrangements are emerging for explicitly incorporating ethical values in the process of scientific research. The workshop will focus on the following questions:
· How and via what instruments (e.g. ethical advisory committees, citizen juries) are scientists, policy makers and society communicating with each other in order to conduct 'ethically acceptable science'?
· Is a transdisciplinary, socially inclusive way of knowledge production compatible with the traditional ('Mertonian') ethics of science?
· What elements are conducive to incorporating ethical values into the research process, and what does this mean for the development of new tools and instruments?

Call for papers
You can send us an abstract of a paper to be presented at one of the workshops of the conference. There will be room for 3 presentations (10 mins.) at most workshops. Should your paper be accepted by the scientific committee, it will appear in the proceedings of this conference, even if it is not presented at one of the workshops. Abstracts (1 A4 text or 400 words, max. 1 table and/or 1 illustration in .jpg format) to be sent to the Da Vinci Institute (info@davinci-instituut.nl) before September 1st.
