Call for ABSTRACTS: Southwest Colloquium in the History and
Philosophy of the Life Sciences. Deadline: February 1, 2006.
Sponsored by the University of California Davis (Science and
Technology Studies; Department of Philosophy) and Arizona State
University (Center for Biology and Society).
This is the fourth year of the Southwest Colloquium in the History
and Philosophy of the Life Sciences, an annual event that includes a
one-day Graduate Student Symposium and a one-day Faculty/Graduate
Student Workshop devoted to a specific topic. The SCHPLS was
founded in 2001 by Sahotra Sarkar and Manfred Laubichler.
The annual Graduate Student Symposium takes place over two days and
features presentations by graduate students on any topic in the
history and philosophy of the life sciences, although preference is
given to papers that are related to the topic of the
Faculty/Graduate Student Workshop. All submissions are subject to
peer review, and will be circulated before the meeting. The
symposium also includes a keynote address by an outstanding
researcher.
The 2006 meeting will be held April 1-2 on the campus of the
University of California, Davis. One hallmark of the SCHPLS has been
the extent to which practitioners of various disciplines attempt to
translate others' work into their own disciplinary context. Because
there are no concurrent sessions, every paper is delivered to an
audience that is made up of individuals from various fields. This
year, these 'translations' will be the topic of the workshop portion
of the meeting, and special attention will be given throughout the
event to communication and collaboration across disciplines, both in
the humanities and in the biological sciences.
The keynote address will be given by Dr. Robert E. Page, Jr.,
Foundation Professor and Director of the School of Life Sciences at
Arizona State University and former Chairperson of the Department of
Entomology at UC Davis.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is February 1, 2006.
Abstracts should be submitted to Andrew Hamilton
(alhamilton@ucdavis.edu) for distribution to the reviewers.
Limited funds are available to support graduate student travel to
attend the meeting.
