University of Cambridge
Department of History and Philosophy of Science

Research Associateship in Philosophy (3-year position)

Salary: £23,182-£25,565

Matching awards from the Leverhulme and the Isaac Newton Trusts have
enabled the Department of History and Philosophy of Science to seek to
appoint a Research Associate to work on a 3-year philosophical project on
biological accounts of human nature and their applications to ethical and
political theory. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will take
up the post in October 2006, but some flexibility could be introduced for a
very strong candidate. Ideal candidates will have a PhD, and a first-rate
research record in philosophy of biology. Candidates with specialisation in
ethics or political philosophy will also be considered, providing they have
an interest in philosophy of biology. The candidate's research record
should be such as to strengthen the Department's submission in the upcoming
Research Assessment Exercise. The candidate will collaborate closely on
research with Dr Tim Lewens, and will produce both single- and
joint-authored articles under his guidance. The successful applicant will
also provide teaching and administrative cover for Dr Lewens while he is on
leave in the academic year 2007-8. For the remaining 2 years of the project
the candidate will focus on research, and teaching and administrative
duties will be light.

Applications, in hard copy only, should be sent to the Administrator, Dept
of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge, Free School
