Sesqui Lecturer in Bioethics

The Unit for History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) and the Centre for Values,
Ethics and the law in Medicine (VELIM), University of Sydney, Australia, invites
applications for the position of Sesqui Lecturer in Bioethics.  This position is
supported through strategic university funds designated for new appointment in
key growth areas.  The position offer the appointee an opportunity to expand
their disciplinary knowledge, teaching skills and research experience in
bioethics and to develop a national and international profile as a bioethics
researcher and scholar while working in an innovative, interdisciplinary
setting.

The Unit for HPS is an academic unit in the Faculty of Science engaged in
undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.  Academics in HPS have strong research
profiles in the history and philosophy of medicine, biology, psychology, and
early modern science, as well as public understanding of science and bioethics,
especially topics in biotechnology, genetics, transplantation, stem cells and
health policy.  VELIM is an independent university centre within the Faculty of
Medicine.  Academics at VELIM engage in ethics consultation, postgraduate and
undergraduate education, research and community outreach aimed at crossing
disciplinary, professional and socio-political boundaries in order to promote
dialogue and understanding.  Researchers at VELIM have major collaborative
projects using qualitative, other empirical and theoretical methods to examine
patient experiences, risk, biotechnology, genetics, transplantation, stem cells,
discourse, health policy and medical decision-making.

The primary research interests of the successful applicant must be in bioethics.
 He or she will have a PhD or equivalent qualification in bioethics, HPS or a
relevant discipline; a strong research and publication record with the potential
to recruit postgraduate students and attract external funding; administrative
experience commensurate with the ability to develop and manage postgraduate
programs in bioethics and HPS; teaching experience in bioethics or science and
ethics at the undergraduate or postgraduate level; and basic computer skills
(word processing, ability to access internet, etc).

Preference will be give to applicants with disciplinary knowledge and /or
teaching experience in additional fields relevant to bioethics, HPS or
scientific or medical fields; those with research interests or ongoing projects
that complement those of the staff at VELIM and HPS; and familiarity with
web-based teaching support.  The successful applicant will be expected to
maintain an active research and publication record, to be eager to engage in
collaborative research projects and to apply for competitive research support
from granting agencies.

The position is full-time continuing available from 1 July 2006, subject to the
completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.  Membership in
a University-approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new

Remuneration Package: AU$78,555 to 93,283 per annum (which includes a base
salary Lecturer Level B: $66,380 to $78,826 per annum, leave loading and up to
17% employer‚s contribution to superannuation).
