Workshop ”Graphing Genes, Cells and Embryos”: Final Announcement
Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples, May 17-20, 2007
organized by: Sabine Brauckmann, Christina Brandt and Denis Thieffry
The workshop will gather biological scientists and scholars to discuss the
graphical practices in molecular, cellular, developmental and evolutionary
biology, principally during the 20th century, with incursions in the 19th and
21th centuries. It focuses on (1) the biological material considered in priority
(e.g. embryos, cells, and genes), (2) the type of graphical representations used
(e.g. fate maps, evolutionary trees, metabolic and gene networks), (3) the usage
of these graphical representations, and (4) the techniques and tools employed to
construct these graphs. An aim is to show by concrete case studies how the
different types of 'graphs' relate to experimental procedures, and how graphical
representations evolved historically with data accumulation, diversification,
and technical refinement. To foster a truly interdisciplinary communication, the
contributions of biologists and scholars will intertwined in each session. Ample
time will be devoted to discussions, as for small gatherings to develop fruitful
collaborations between the biological sciences and the humanities.
