Postgraduate Studentships in
Philosophy, History & Philosophy
of Science, and Health Care Ethics
The Department of Philosophy intends to offer up to four studentships for
suitably qualified candidates accepted for full-time or part-time postgraduate
taught or research degree programmes in the Department. The awards, which are
tenable from September or October 2007, are to the value of £11,000 for PhD
candidates and £8,000 for MA students plus full fees. PhD awards are for one
year in the first instance, renewal being subject to satisfactory progress. The
Department operates a professional training and development scheme for
postgraduates: as part of this scheme, successful applicants are often given the
opportunity to undertake teaching, which is paid at an hourly rate.
With over 30 staff, the Department of Philosophy is one of the largest in the
UK. It has an active Graduate School offering taught MAs in Health Care Ethics,
History and Philosophy of Science, Metaphysics, Philosophy, Philosophy of
Physics, Philosophy of Religion, and Science Communication, as well as research
supervision in all major areas of Philosophy and History & Philosophy of
Science. The Department is particularly strong in Aesthetics, History of
Analytic Philosophy, History and Philosophy of Science, Metaphysics, and
Philosophy of Physics, and is especially interested in attracting applications
from outstanding students in those areas. The Department helps with relevant
conference expenses and provides a bursary (up to £200) for archive research.
