Associate Research Fellow NEW
Ref: M02N1090
Closes 25th May 2007
Egenis, School of Humanities & Social Sciences incorporating the Institute of
Arab and Islamic Studies (Academic)
Salary: Scale E pts 23-26 £22,332 - £24,403.
This new full time post is available from October 2007 on a fixed term basis
until September 2009. Egenis seeks to appoint an Associate Research Fellow for
an initial period of two years to investigate the development and application of
apomixis as a breeding tool for crops especially in the context of agriculture
in the developing world. Apomixis is a form of reproductive system in which the
maternal genetic constitution is conserved and which is relatively common in the
plant kingdom though rare among crop species. It has yet to be broadly harnessed
as a breeding tool. Among a range of possible applications, it might enable poor
farmers to use hybrids without the need to purchase new seed year on year. The
initial phase of the project will involve an investigation of the development of
breeding technologies associated with the deployment of apomixis at laboratory
locations around the world. This will form the basis for a review of the current
technology and its trajectories.
Applicants should have proven analytical skills and experience in research,
together with an ability to engage with complex technological scenarios in
laboratory settings. Some background in the natural sciences is expected.
Further information is available from Professor Steve Hughes at Egenis,
