Dear ISHPSSB listserv moderator,

We're co-organising a conference that might be of interest to you and your
colleagues, and so I'd be very grateful if you can forward this email to any
relevant researchers.

The conference is the first of a series of annual international events based
around the Essex school of discourse theory developed by Ernesto Laclau and
Chantal Mouffe. Though typically this theory has been applied to analyse
traditional political practices, its central ontological critique of the
separation between the material and the ideational means there is the potential
for a useful linkage to biological research. As such, it would be interesting to
organise a panel discussing the discursivity of biology and its implications for
understanding the relationship between social practices and the physical body
(human or animal). Presenters would be expected to provide a ten minute oral
presentation of their research, and then participate within a discussion session
with fellow presenters and the audience.

Unfortunately the conference can't provide finance to cover travel or
accommodation, but if this event sufficiently interests you or your colleagues
then hopefully that isn't a problem.

Included below is the formal call for papers with more detailed information on
the conference proceedings.

Thanks very much!
Michael Strange

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PANELS
Inaugural World Conference:
Ideology and Discourse Analysis (IDA)

Rethinking Political Frontiers and Democracy in a New World Order

Keynote speaker:
Ernesto Laclau
University of Essex/Northwestern University

8-10 September 2008
Roskilde University, Denmark

Organizing Committee
Torben Dyrberg, Allan Dreyer Hansen & Michael Strange (Roskilde University)
Jason Glynos, David Howarth & Aletta Norval (University of Essex)

Over the course of the last 25 years, the Essex School in Ideology and Discourse
Analysis (IDA) has established itself as an important and distinctive
alternative to mainstream social science approaches. Established in 1982 by
Professor Ernesto Laclau, the intellectual programme in Ideology and Discourse
Analysis draws on a wide range of traditions and disciplines to develop a novel
set of conceptual tools intended to enhance theoretical, empirical, and
normative research.

IDA has expanded understanding of a rapidly changing world order through
concretely theorising the emergence of new social configurations, covering
global economic forces to 'risky' food.

Taking an anti-essentialist conception of discourse as a central theoretical
category, the IDA programme draws on and engages with post-marxism,
post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, post-Heideggerian phenomenology and
hermeneutics, post-analytical philosophy, among others. Discourse theory, as
deployed by the IDA research programme has thus come to be associated with a
series of proper names, such as Marx, Gramsci, Althusser, Saussure, Barthes,
Laclau and Mouffe, Lacan, Zizek, Derrida, Wittgenstein, and Foucault.

It is in the context of its now quarter-century history that we are pleased to
announce the inaugural IDA world conference, held at Roskilde University,
Denmark. This conference aims to support the continuing development of the IDA
approach and to establish dialogues with related approaches. The conference is
thus designed to offer opportunities for discussion and debate on a range of
theoretical, methodological and substantive topics of analysis.

Panel topics might include:
                Political theory
                Post-marxism
