Postdoctoral Position in Science Studies, Georgia Institute of Technology
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher on a project funded by the US
National Science Foundation (pending final approval): “Becoming a 21st
century scientist: cognitive practices, identity formation, and learning
in integrative systems biology (ISB).” The person we seek will have a
background that includes research in some area of science studies with
focus on the biological sciences (systems biology preferred) and
knowledge of the practices of computational modeling/simulation
(sufficient to examine the ISB modeling practices), who is interested in
conducting ethnographic research (experience would be a plus, but is not
required).
The objective of the project is to understand the nature of the research
practices in the emerging field of integrative systems biology (ISB),
how researchers navigate this transdisciplinary space, and what
challenges these pose for learners. Our findings will assist in the
development of a new Ph.D program in ISB. We will conduct ethnographic
field observations and interviews, coupled with analyses of research
products, written and technological. The field studies will be conducted
in two cutting-edge research laboratories in ISB at a leading research
university. One lab undertakes only computational research; the other
conducts a mix of biological, computational, and engineering research.
The position is located in the School of Interactive Computing, Georgia
Institute of Technology with the Cognition and Learning in
Interdisciplinary Cultures research group (http://www.clic.gatech.edu).
Research will be conducted with Prof. Nancy Nersessian and Dr. Wendy
Newstetter, who are well-established researchers in cognitive studies of
science, philosophy and history of science, and the learning sciences.
The position can begin as early as October 1, 2009 and continues for 2
years. The 12-month salary is $45,000 plus health and retirement
benefits.
Interested applicants should contact Nancy Nersessian
nancyn@cc.gatech.edu.
