EDUCATION COMMITTEE 2007-2009 Through their teaching, writing, and public presentations many ISHPSSBers promote the constructively critical analysis of science among students, practicing scientists, science studies scholars, and the wider public. The charge of the Education Committee is to facilitate the exchange of ideas, make resources available, and foster collaborative projects among ISHPSSBers as they work to address this challenge. The Committee's responsibilities may include planning of pre-conference education workshops and conference sessions, encouraging colleagues to present education-related work at ISHPSSB, developing connections with other educational initiatives in the life sciences and science studies, and maintaining a webpage that makes appropriate science education and science studies education resources widely available.
2003 Committee Report The purpose of the Education Committee is to foster interactions and provide resources that support ISHPSSB members' efforts to promote the constructively critical analysis of science among students, practicing scientists, science studies scholars, and the wider public. To pursue this goal at the Vienna meeting, the committee organized the pre-conference workshop "Biology and Society Programs: Preparing Students for Biology in Social Context." At the workshop, twenty-five participants and five presenters enjoyed a stimulating and valuable day-long conversation. The committee also solicited paper and session proposals related to biology education. Due in part to these efforts, the Vienna conference included papers that examined biology education in contemporary and historical contexts, and from diverse interpretive perspectives. 2001 Committee Report Peter Taylor (education chair) thanked committee members and reported on a successful pre-conference workshop on education, attended by twenty participants. Future workshops are planned and interested organizers should feel welcome to propose topics. A lunch discussion of education was planned. Details concerning additional education initiatives are available on the Education Committee Website. 1999 Committee Report Education Committee: 1) established a web site, linked to the society's website. The committee welcomes additions to the site and a volunteer to take over its development. 2) affiliated with Coalition for Education in the Life Sciences, but was not able to respond to some of the funding possibilities CELS brought to our attention. Affiliation may need to be reassessed in light of available society funds. 3) organized a pre-conference workshop on teaching HPSS in biology, but had to cancel this when a majority of the presenters withdrew. As a substitute, there will be a roundtable during lunch tomorrow for all interested in future acitivities around teaching HPSS in biology at all levels K - graduate school. People interested but unable to attend lunch should express their interest to Peter Taylor. 1999 Committee Report The committee has established a website linking to resources for teaching HPSSB. The site can be reached through the ISHPSSB home page. We invite suggestions for additional links, including links to your own syllabi and other work. Files sent by e-mail attachment can also be included on the site. Please also send bibliographic references and feedback on links we have included. Do you have a syllabus on-line for any of the following: History of Biology; Philosophy of Biology; Biology & Society; Bioethics; Biology, enriched by HPSS; Darwin, The Genetics Revolution, 20th-Century Agriculture, Race, Gender & Science, or other special topics? Please send us your URL. Or take a moment to forward the latest electronic copy of your syllabus? We are also asking for a short informal paragraph discussing the design of your course, any underlying themes, effective teaching startegies relevant to the material, etc. We are also building a resource center for non-ISHPSSB members, especially K-12 teachers and non-majors biology teachers. If you have material relevant to this audience, let us know! Contact Peter Taylor or Douglas Allchin: peter.taylor@umb.edu or allchin@pclink.com 1998 Committee Report Educational Resources Website. The Society’s general meeting in Seattle endorsed the idea of connecting with other educational initiatives in the life sciences and established an educational committee. The committee has established a website, linked to the Society’s home page (www.phil.vt.edu/ishpssb), which is very much still in construction. We invite suggestions for additional links, including links to your own syllabi and other work. Files sent by e-mail attachment can also be included on the site. Please also send bibliographic references and feedback on links we have included.
