Election Procedures for Student Representative
developed by the Student Advisory Committee 2003-2005, in consultation
with the Student Representative 2003-2005 and the Student Representative
2005-2007.
These election procedures reflect the student members interests
and opinions, as they were expressed during the Graduate Student Member
General Meeting in Guelph, 2005.
- Call for nominations
A call for Student Representative nominations will be published in the
off-year Spring Newsletter and posted on the societys web-site.
- Nominations
- Any graduate student member in good standing (except the Student Representative
in office) may nominate herself for Student Representative.
- Self-nominations should be submitted to the Student Representative,
accompanied by a brief biography as well as a platform statement.
- There is no limit to the number of self-nominees.
- Deadline for submissions will be four weeks before the regular biennial
meeting.
- Candidates
- Two weeks before the regular biennial meeting the Student Representative,
in consultation with the Student Advisory Committee, will evaluate the
biographies and statements submitted, and will circulate among the student
membership those of the students who will stand for election.
- There is no limit to the number of candidates, although no more than
four is recommended, based on the election procedure described below.
- Election
- Election for Student Representative will take place during the Graduate
Student Member General Meeting (lunch break before the General Membership
Meeting).
- Two members of the Student Asvisory Committee will administer balloting.
- Each candidate will have the opportunity to introduce herself and briefly
present her platform before balloting begins.
- Election of the Student Representative will be accomplished by run-off
voting in the following way: rounds of voting will proceed until one candidate
obtains the majority of votes. This procedure ensures that election reflects
the choice of the majority of students present at the Graduate Student
Member General Meeting.
- Students who are not present at the Meeting will not have a chance to
vote.
- Student Representative
- The Student Representative to the Council will hold office for a period
of two years.
- Past Student Representatives may not nominate themselves for another
period.
- The duties of the newly elected Student Representative begin immediately
after the biennial meeting.
