Is there lodging available on-site?
How do I get to USF and how do I get around San Francisco?
I know this is a philosophy of biology graduate training workshop, but I'm not a philosopher. Can I still participate in the workshop?
- Absolutely! FDISH aims to be representative of the diverse interests of ISHPSSB members. One of the areas FDISH wants to emphasize is that philosophy of biology is intertwined with both the history and social studies of biology. Speakers and roundtable discussions will investigate how to effectively work in and among the different disciplines. There will be biologists, philosophers, historians, social scientists, and everyone else in between.
I'm not a graduate student (yet). Will this workshop be relevant to me?
- Without a doubt. FDISH will include a mix of beginning and advanced graduate students, junior and senior faculty, and researchers from across the country. If you are looking into applying to graduate programs in history, philosophy, sociology, biology, or science studies, there will be plenty of opportunities to discuss your interests with both graduate students and faculty in various fields. Moreover, the workshop will give you a sense of the kinds of questions and research problems that are of current interest.
What are these "happy office hours" on the schedule?
- These are scheduled informal office hours that faculty have graciously volunteered to hold at certain "happy" locations around San Francisco. They are great opportunities for you to meet with specific faculty and discuss your research, their research, or anything you want. One of the goals of the workshop is to have a lot of one on one interactions between students and faculty. What better way to guarantee that meeting with a specific faculty member than to see her/him at office hours?
Do I need to rent a car?
- No. In fact, unless you decide to travel outside of San Francisco, we do not recommend it.
Is there parking available on-site?
Is financial support available?
- Yes. There is limited funding for graduate student (and undergraduate) travel. Check the graduate student travel page.
How much will it cost?
- Once your application has been received and accepted, there will be a $25 registration fee. See the registration page for more information.
Why is there an application form? Can't I just show up at the workshop and register and pay then?
- Unfortunately, the workshop will be limited to 50 participants so advanced registration is required. The limited participation is due to venue size constraints as well as keeping in line with the goals of the workshop. Therefore, applications must be submitted to keep track of participant numbers.
Are meals included?
- Coffee and snacks will be available during breaks, but meals are not included.
Who is organizing this workshop?
- Meet the amazing organizers here.
