Weather

The weather in San Francisco can be tricky.  You might wear anything from shorts and a t-shirt to a coat and scarf...all within half an hour!  Please be prepared for sunny warm Californian days and chilly foggy evenings.

Workshop Location

FDISH will be held on the campus of the University of San Francisco in the heart of San Francisco. Directions to USF can be found here and a map of the campus, including locations of the rooms used during the workshop, can be found here. FDISH will be held in the Lone Mountain building as well as the UC Faculty Room. Please see the schedule for room assignments during each day of the workshop.

Air Travel:

San Francisco is accessed via three international airports: San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. All major airlines, as well as well as a number of smaller budget airlines, fly into one or more of these airports.

Transportation:

For information on ground transportation from the airports to San Francisco, check the airport sites above. From San Francisco International Airport (SFO), check here.

Public transportation within San Francisco is limited to the Muni, the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), cable cars to select destinations, and taxis. All events for the workshop will be held either at the University or within short walking distance of the University.

You can download the following doc file for detailed information on transit to and from the airports as well as travel within San Francisco:  Transit info

Lodging and Accommodations:

Although there is no on-site lodging at USF, there will be a limited number of discounted rooms available at select hotels and bed and breakfasts in the area. The organizers highly recommend that participants stay at Inn 1890, a small, affordable, and very nicely appointed bed and breakfast located ten-minute's walk from the USF campus. The organizing committee has secured all the rooms in the Inn until August first, on a first come, first served basis. A substantial conference discount is available for the workshop, but you must call (rather than book through the Inn's website) to get it.

Other recommendations are the Red Victorian, The Stanyan Park Hotel, and the Monte Cristo Inn. The Red Victorian is situated in the middle of the action on Haight Street, and might best be described as Classic San Francisco Funkadelic. Do not be surprised if your call to make a reservation is answered by someone called 'Moonbeam'. If your think of the 60s as turbulent, the Red Vic might not be for you. Rates run from $72 to $200 for a double room. The Stanyan is much more formal and is about three blocks closer to USF. Rooms there go for about $130 for a double to $315 for a two-bedroom suite. The Monte Cristo falls between the Red Vic and the Stanyan on the International Funkiness Scale. It's now a fairly standard inn, but has been everything from a speakeasy to a bordello. No one on staff there answers to 'Moondoggie' or 'Windsong'. Prices range from $72 to $118. All of these hotels are situated within easy walking distance of USF.

Be sure to let the hotels know that you are part of the "Future Directions Workshop" in order to receive the discounted rates.

More information on hotels will be posted as we collect it, so check back often.

Sightseeing in San Francisco

Both hotels are also within close walking distance to two of the city's most vibrant and central attractions: the Haight neighborhood and Golden Gate Park. A fifteen-minute walk (or short, inexpensive cab ride) will take you to the Richmond neighborhood and Clement Street, another of the city's cultural hubs.

For more information on San Francisco and how to get around, see the Visitor's Bureau website. We will have more information on things to do and places to see in San Francisco (there's a lot!) so please check back often.

If you have further questions about your travel plans or would like more information on accommodations and within-San Francisco travel, please contact Patrick Forber.
